Periodontal Abscess Treatment

Periodontal Abscess Treatment
People who suffer from a dental abscess are concerned with alleviating the pain, but the real goal of treatment is to eradicate the underlying infection. Patients can try to manage their pain by using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen (sold as Advil) or naproxen (sold as Aleve), but these drugs will not treat the abscess itself. Rinsing with warm saltwater or clove oil can sometimes ease the pain, at least temporarily.

The abscess must either rupture on its own or be surgically drained. If the abscess ruptures by itself, rinsing with warm saltwater will help cleanse the area and encourage drainage of the pus. If the dental abscess does not rupture on its own, or if the pain cannot be controlled with nonprescription products, your dentist may give you prescription pain relievers as well as antibiotics to eliminate the infection. A root canal procedure to try to save the infected tooth may be performed if enough of the tooth's structure remains, but in severe cases the abscessed tooth may need to be extracted.

A dental abscess is considered an emergency condition. If not treated promptly and properly, the bone at the tip of the tooth can erode or a fistula can develop. The infection can also spread throughout your body, resulting in general illness and fever. If left untreated, sepsis, endocarditis or other life-threatening complications sometimes occur.

Tooth pain is a pain that we feel when something is wrong with our teeth or periodontal surrounding. As for the dental reasons, the tooth pain can occur because of the tooth itself, because of the conditions of the gum or the bones beneath the tooth, nerves supplying the area of the tooth, the temporom and ibular joints and the muscles that move the jaw.

A mild tooth pain is the pain that is usually manifested as an increased sensitivity of the tooth to cold or hot substances. Moderate pain is more severe, as you can guess. Possible reasons for the moderate pain can be the inflammation and infection of the dental pulp. The pain will be felt anytime you touch your tooth. Dental abscess forms a pus pocket that has bacteria, dead tissue (of the dental pulp mostly), and white blood cells.

Periapical abscess is the most common type of abscess and it starts from the dental pulp which is in the center of the tooth. This type of abscess happens when there is complication due to tooth decay. Periodontal abscess begins at the supporting structures of the teeth like periodontium that is located between the gum and tooth. This happens when there is gum disease which is inflammation or infection of the tissues that surround the teeth. A periodontal abscess results in swelling next to a tooth and hence is also called as a gum boil.

If the abscess is periodontal the dentist will clean the 'pocket where the abscess had formed. This prevents recurrence of infection.
