
When a patient is diagnosed with periodontal (gum) disease, periodontists may choose either a surgical or non surgical treatment option. AAP treatment guidelines state that the least invasive and most cost effective options should be used to achieve and maintain periodontal health. After receiving a scaling and root planning procedure, most periodontists agree that many patients do not require further active treatment, including more invasive surgery.

Periodontal Procedures
When diagnosed with periodontal disease, a more complex treatment plan may be necessary and your periodontist may recommend periodontal surgery. The four types of the most prescribed surgical treatments are as follows: Pocket Reduction Procedures, Regenerative Procedures, Crown Lengthening, Soft Tissue Grafts.

Periodontal Procedures
Patients may experience less bleeding, swelling and discomfort when lasers are used properly during periodontal therapy. If incorrect wavelengths and/or power levels are used during a periodontal procedure, damage to periodontal tissues can occur.Many periodontists also perform cosmetic procedures to enhance a patient's smile in addition to performing surgeries to maintain periodontal health and to treat periodontal disease. Cosmetic procedures include Crown Lengthening, Soft Tissue Grafts and Ridge Augmentation
